Ready to shake off the winter chill?\u00c2\u00a0 Just imagine paddling across a cool lake<\/a> on a warm, sunny summer day<\/a>, in the middle of millions of acres of rugged wilderness beauty<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Or seeing the setting sun<\/a>, bathing wisps of clouds in orange and red<\/a>, while the loons<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0begin their evening calls<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh yeah and, after 6 days in the woods, the best hot shower, cold beer and hot tub soak you’ve ever had.\u00c2\u00a0 That’s right kiddies… after 4 years in other locales, we’re headed back to Quetico!<\/p>\n Details…<\/p>\n WHAT<\/span>: 6 Days of canoeing (and portaging), camping, fishing, exploration and fun<\/p>\n WHERE<\/span>: Quetico Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada<\/p>\n WHEN<\/span>: August 17-24, 2013<\/p>\n WHO<\/span>: Group size is\u00c2\u00a0limited to 9 people.\u00c2\u00a0 We’ll take people until we’re full-up, so first-come first-served!\u00c2\u00a0 ***UPDATE 4\/22:\u00c2\u00a08 of the 9 slots are taken, only\u00c2\u00a01 remains.\u00c2\u00a0 Get your name in by 5\/1 if you want to go!***<\/strong><\/p>\n HOW MUCH<\/span>: Budgeted from Chicago and back, about $600-$800 per\u00c2\u00a0person.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Includes: permits, all in-park food, canoe rentals (if needed), group meals in transit, hotel nights (1 in, 1 out), group gear (packs, stove, etc.), gas for the drive up and back from Chicago, and any other group outfitting needs.\u00c2\u00a0 Does NOT include beers to drink in the hot tub after we exit the park, that’s seperate.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Quetico Provincial Park<\/a> is the Canadian mirror to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Bigger and much less travelled than its border-sharing American cousin, Quetico and the surrounding crown lands make up a nearly\u00c2\u00a02 million acre roadless wilderness of lakes<\/a>, streams<\/a> and ancient forests<\/a> clinging to ancient rock<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The only way in, out or through the park is with a canoe to paddle<\/a> and 2 feet to portage<\/a> from lake to lake – no motorized boats or vehicles of any kind on these waters<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 You can go days or more without seeing another human soul, but you won’t likely leave without seeing a moose<\/a> or two,\u00c2\u00a0or maybe hearing wolves howling in the distance<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Fishing is superb for walleye<\/a>, northern pike<\/a>, smallmouth and largemouth bass<\/a>, and lake trout<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 There are archaelogical sites<\/a> scattered throughout the park, reminding you whose path you are following.\u00c2\u00a0 The night sky is a riot of stars<\/a> and sometimes, the Northern Lights<\/a>.<\/p>\n So what does a Quetico trip look like?\u00c2\u00a0 For those uninitiated, here’s how this goes.\u00c2\u00a0 The group leaves in cars from Chicago<\/a> early on Saturday morning, to make the long drive up to Ely, Minnesota<\/a>, where we will stay (with the outfitter<\/a>\/resort in a cabin) for the night (do final gear shake-out<\/a>, out to dinner<\/a>, etc.).\u00c2\u00a0 Sunday morning (early again) we put our boats, our gear and ourselves on a motor boat, and the outfitter drives us across some lakes<\/a> to the edge of the park to drop us off<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 That is where the trip really starts<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 We will spend 6 days and 5 nights canoeing<\/a>, portaging<\/a>, camping<\/a>, fishing<\/a> and exploring in the park<\/a>, probably in a 2-days-in, 2-days-base-camp<\/a>, 2-days-out format.\u00c2\u00a0 Most of the travelling is done\u00c2\u00a0in canoes on the water, but some connections between lakes require portaging<\/a> – following a trail<\/a> (sometimes a rough one<\/a>) ranging from a few yards to a mile, carrying the canoes<\/a> and gear<\/a> to the next lake.\u00c2\u00a0 The camping is primitive<\/a> – there are no facilities or enhancements<\/a>, the campsites are just areas where you can put a tent or two<\/a> down, and might have a fire ring to gather ’round<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 On the final day we get a boat hop back out to our cars from the edge of the park, and drive back into Ely to check into a hotel for much-needed showers, followed by dinner<\/a>, beers<\/a>, swimming, etc<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Then on Saturday, we drive back to Chi-town<\/a>.<\/p>\n And what about this particular trip – what route are we taking this time?\u00c2\u00a0 Each trip we do, we visit different places – if you don’t have a Quetico map this paragraph may seem like a foreign language.\u00c2\u00a0 This trip, we are putting in at Lac La Croix, which is the southwest of 6 primary put-ins, and the only one we haven’t yet used.\u00c2\u00a0 We’ll be headed east over the Black Robe Portage to McAree, Pond and Wicksteed lakes, to camp the first night on Wicksteed or Darky.\u00c2\u00a0 2nd day in, its Darky, Brent, possibly William and on to either Suzanette or Conmee for a base camp.\u00c2\u00a0 We camp there 3 nights and 2 days, doing day trips into the very heart of the park – Delahey and Veron, Camel, and anywhere else we want to visit.\u00c2\u00a0 On the way back out, we can either do the Memory Lane portages to Poohbah and then the Maligne River out (Via Minn), or one of a few other routes, back to Lac La Croix.<\/p>\n In terms of personal gear, you’ll need a sleeping bag<\/a>,\u00c2\u00a0appropriate clothing<\/a>\/shoes<\/a> and either a passport<\/a> or similar identification to enter Canada.\u00c2\u00a0 A gear list will be sent out to people going with further details, and if you don’t have a passport, we can discuss with you what your other options are.\u00c2\u00a0 Also, IMPORTANT: YOU MUST KNOW HOW TO SWIM<\/a> TO GO ON A QUETICO TRIP<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 You don’t have to be a life guard or anything, but you need to be able to handle yourself in the water<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 We will have life vests<\/a> and other safety equipment<\/a>, but strange things sometimes\u00c2\u00a0happen<\/a>, and we will be spending a lot of time on the water<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 If you don’t feel comfortable in the water, but want to go, then you best get to work on some lessons.<\/p>\n A brief warning, as we do with all of our trips, especially if you are new to the wilderness… a wilderness is by nature and name, wild.\u00c2\u00a0 We will be, at times, multiple days’ travel from any sort of civilization or help<\/a>, and you are exposed to all the elements<\/a> while on the trip.\u00c2\u00a0 Weather can be erratic<\/a>, trails poorly marked and maintained, and waters unforgiving<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Make sure you are mentally<\/a> and physically prepared<\/a> for that.<\/p>\n Now with all that stuff out of the way, what is your reward?\u00c2\u00a0 All the beauty of a unique wilderness<\/a>, stunning sunsets<\/a> and night skies<\/a>, tranquility<\/a>, comraderie<\/a> and an adventure unlike any other<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Sound good?\u00c2\u00a0 Are you
